Good Afternoon,
As we step into May, DE Group USA is observing the duality of this date: it is both International Workers’ Day, a time to recognize the contributions and rights of our workforce, and World Productivity Day, an ideal moment to streamline our project workflows as we enter the peak spring season. Our field crews are currently focusing on efficiency audits, maximizing our output while ensuring our teams remain safe and well-supported.
📉 Market Insight: The “Mueller” May 4th Deadline
If you have pending projects involving steep-slope roofing or vinyl siding, the clock is ticking on current pricing.
The Mueller Increase: Mueller Roofing Distributors has confirmed a price increase of 5% to 8% on all steep-slope roofing and vinyl products, effective for all shipments on or after Monday, May 4, 2026.
Strategic Takeaway: To bypass this increase, we must have your material allotment ordered and ready for shipment before this Monday. Our procurement team is prioritizing all “pending” quotes today to secure current rates before the weekend.

My Favorite/ Mariana
It has been wonderful to see the incredible work our peers are producing right now. This week, we’re excited to share a featured project from Illiz Architektur.
Their thoughtful approach reflects a deep commitment to both craft and creativity, reminding us all of the impact architecture has when it is designed with both purpose and beauty in mind.
Public Swimming Pool by Illiz Architektur
The Public Swimming Pool Großfeldsiedlung (Hallenbad Großfeldsiedlung) expansion, designed by Illiz Architektur and completed in 2020, is a surgical architectural intervention in Vienna’s 21st district. The project involved adding a new training and instructional pool to a pre-existing 1970s swimming complex.
Instead of mimicking the original brutalist aesthetic, Illiz Architektur opted for a shimmering, “silvery” contrast that has turned a utilitarian municipal building into a neighborhood landmark.
The “Silver Volume” and Vertical Rhythm
The expansion is essentially a monolithic box that sits adjacent to the original structure, but its facade treatment makes it feel far lighter than its concrete predecessor.
Aluminum Fins: The building is wrapped in a rhythmic skin of vertical aluminum fins. These fins serve three purposes: they provide solar shading, offer privacy for swimmers from the street, and create a “moiré effect” as people move past the building, making the facade appear to ripple like water.
The Floating Effect: The architects recessed the base of the new volume, making the heavy, metallic box appear to hover slightly above the ground.
Contextual Dialogue: While the new wing is contemporary, it respects the height and scale of the original 1970s pool, creating a harmonious “then and now” composition on the site.

Beyond the Coast: Climate Risk Reshapes National Insurance Pricing
For decades, high premiums were primarily a concern for coastal property owners. That regional divide is disappearing as inland threats, such as severe wind, hail, and wildfires, drive up insurance costs nationwide. Analysts note that while hurricanes remain the costliest factor in many areas, the broader geographic expansion of high-risk events is forcing a fundamental, permanent shift in how insurers calculate and charge for risk.

New Analysis Challenges Insurance Industry Profitability and Costs
A recent study from the Vanderbilt Policy Accelerator claims that Americans are currently overpaying for insurance by roughly $150 billion each year. The report highlights a significant drop in “loss ratios” the amount of money insurers pay out in claims relative to the premiums they collect, compared to the 1990s. The findings have ignited calls for federal intervention, though industry leaders argue these reserves are essential to ensure long-term stability against rising catastrophe costs.
HOUSING LEGISLATION
The Wall Street Journal
Proposed Investor Curbs Spark Development Stalls
The 21st Century ROAD to Housing Act is creating significant friction for the housing sector, particularly regarding provisions that restrict institutional investors from buying single-family homes. Developers involved in build-to-rent projects are reporting that the looming threat of forced divestment and strict ownership limitations is causing them to hit the brakes on new construction, complicating the effort to add supply to a tight market.
CODES AND STANDARDS

FHA and USDA Roll Back Energy Code Mandates to Spur Affordability
In a move designed to lower the barrier to homeownership, HUD and the USDA have rescinded a 2024 rule that required new homes financed through their programs to meet the 2021 International Energy Conservation Code (IECC). Officials argue the mandate was adding tens of thousands of dollars to the cost of new construction without enough benefit to justify the expense. By reverting to older energy standards, the agencies hope to expand financing options and lower initial costs for first-time and rural buyers.

Did you know? For a long time, if you wanted the look of premium slate or cedar, you had to pay a fortune for the real thing. Now, high-performance composite shingles made from recycled tires, plastic milk jugs, and even sawdust are the big trend.
